Accessibility of websites, especially in education and government, is extremely important.  Beyond the legal requirements, there is a moral component of ease of access as well as a business component. Often times, people aren't intentionally making a decision to make something inaccessible, it's a matter of either lack of training or a mistake.

This session will cover two primary concerns with regard to accessibility:

  • Theme layer and using a base framework
  • Content area / node body, ripe for errors from content contributors

For the theme layer we'll talk about some base-themes that you can use to ensure that the underlying structure of what you create is geared towards an accessible design. Themes are less of an issue in general because you have the greatest amount of control over who implements them and modifies them; it's content contributor training where most fall down on accessibility of websites.

Because of this; we'll also cover some modules, features, and configuration to help prevent your content contributors from accidentally creating accessibility issues with your content.  Projects like Textbook will be covered as just one solution that requires a series of accessibility minded modules in order to function.
